Friday Fact of the Week #25

In 1995, Norway sent a duo with an Irish violinist. 30 years later, in 2025, Ireland send a Norwegian. Returning the favor.

Friday Fact of the Week #24

Justyna Steczkowska has broken the record for biggest gap between participations: 30 years. It was previously held by Anna Vissi, who returned after 24 years. Additionally, it will be exactly 30 years as her first performance took place on 13th May 1995, the same date the first semi final in which Poland participates will be held.

Friday Fact of the Week #23

Since the introduction of two semi finals, there has been a weird coincidence every four years. In 2009, the Netherlands performed last in their semi final and failed to qualify.  In 2013, Serbia performed last and narrowly missed out on qualification. In 2017, Latvia performed last in their semi final and didn't qualify to the final.  In 2021, Denmark performed last and failed to qualify. Additionally, in all years except 2021, Serbia also didn't make it to the final. It's also the only three non-qualifications of the country, so the last performing country and Serbia not qualifying used to be connected. In 2013, Serbia was both at the same time. Another four years have passed now. Will one of the countries performing last fail to qualify? Will Serbia also miss out for the fourth time?

Friday Fact of the Week #22

In 2021, during the flag parade, Stefania was the only participant to bring a flag on stage. The next year, the winning song was called Stefania... Did she inadvertedly predict the future there?

Each country's televote qualification rates [Updated]

Image
Here's how qualifiers would look like if only televote decided. The biggest difference: No one has 100%. Sweden would if we counted from 2010 onwards. 2008 is the only time they were truly saved by the jury. Cyprus has the longest (!) streak after Sweden which is quite impressive. Who would think that Cyprus is such a powerhouse? If not for juries, they would also have the third longest qualification streak instead Norway. Malta and Estonia benefit the most from juries, saving especially the former on several occasions, while Poland benefits the most from televoters. Ironically, they were a jury qualifier in 2008, as they finished 10th in televote and received their wildcard. It's the only one not marked with a * in 2008 and 2009, three other 10th places were replaced by another country. Though it's probably unnecessary to put a * in them as this is about televote qualifiers anyway. I'll probably remove them in the next update.

Qualifiers based on qualification rates in each semi final

Taking it a step further... How do qualification rates change if we look at the semi final the country is in? Of course, Ukraine has 100% in the first semi final, but so does Sweden! Their only non-qualification came in the second semi final. Cyprus also has a very strong record of 87%, only failing once. Just like Norway, who has 80%. Azerbaijan declines compared to their overall record having all of their three non-qualifications in this semi final. They tie Portugal with 67%. The Netherlands do better in this semi final, having a record of 57%. Albania and Estonia are right in the middle with 50%. They qualify more often in the second semi final, and the same applies to Belgium. Despite being drawn more often into the first semi final, they only have a record of 45% in it. The first semi final also isn't particularly lucky for Croatia with just 37%. Poland and San Marino follow with 33%. But the worst is Slovenia with 29%, they have only qualified twice in this semi final. In th...

Qualifiers based on qualification rates

This time, I'm doing a reverse from this year. You already have the graphic to look up all qualification rates. According to them, who would qualify in each semi final? In the first semi final, we have Ukraine with a perfect record (100%) and Sweden with a near perfect one (93%). They are followed by Norway (82%) and Azerbaijan (80%). With a big gap, we then have Cyprus (61%), Albania and Iceland (both 52%). On 8th place is Estonia (50%), who qualify every second year on average. Croatia, Portugal and the Netherlands all tie (47%) for 9th place. San Marino is last with 21%. The second semi final might look weaker on paper, however, numbers tell a different story. We have the other country with 100%, Luxembourg. Greece is next (81%), very closely followed by Armenia and Serbia (both 80%). On 5th place is Australia (75%). Lithuania (63%) and Israel (61%) also have good records, followed by the Nordics Finland (57%) and Denmark (56%). There is a tie for the last spot as either Austria...
