Friday Fact of the Week #20

We have two two-time winners... But we also have a two-time last placer. Anne Karine Strom from Norway is the unlucky participant with this achievement. Therefore, she accounts for two of Norway's last places! In 1974, there was a tie for last place, but as tie-breakers were only used for the first place at the time, all of them share the last place.

Friday Fact of the Week #19

After first places, let's now look at the opposite: last places. (It's to be noted that I use a different method of counting.) Norway is the country with the most last place finishes in the final, twelve. Finland and Germany tie with nine. If you count both last place in final AND semi final, Finland is the sole second, adding two semi final last places to the tally, making it eleven. However, Finland didn't finish dead last in either of those years. The country with the most last place finishes in the semi final is Latvia with five. Despite that, they've only finished dead last once. In my counting method, I differentiate between last place in the final and last place in the semi final. Since 2004, the country finishing last in the final isn't dead last, only the country with the least points in the semi final is. That means that Germany has actually finished last just four times. And Norway also has three less. Here are the true last places of each year: 2004 - Sw...

Friday Fact of the Week #18

So who are the real kings of Eurovision? Sweden or Ireland? Wrong! It's actually the United Kingdom who have five wins and 16 (!) runner-up finishes. This means that they have been among the top 2 an impressive 21 times. Breaking the tie for Sweden & Ireland... Ireland has finished second four times, while Sweden only achieved second place once. This makes eleven top 2's for Ireland compared to Sweden with eight. If we look at the top 3 however, things change. United Kingdom have 3 third places, that's 24 top 3 finishes overall. Ireland have been 3rd just once, meaning they've been in the top 3 twelve times. Sweden has the most third place finishes of the three, six. This raises the total to 14.

Friday Fact of the Week #17

Austria and Norway have received 0 points the most times: 4. The former also has a pattern to receive 0 points from the televote quite a few times in recent years: in the final in 2015 and 2017, and in the semi final in 2019. Portugal and Lithuania are the only countries to receive 0 points on their debut. Only four countries have received 0 points in the semi final (that were also televote only): Switzerland in 2004, Czech Republic in 2009 and Romania and San Marino in 2023. The latter came close to do it in 2017, but received one point from the televote.
